After a fire ripped through almost 500 homes in Mandaue city last June 27, 2019, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Philippines in partnership with Central Visayan Conference provided 450 families cash for basic necessities such as food and building materials for temporary shelters.

Office of Mandaue’s City Social Welfare Services provided food as well as cash assistance.

It took the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) five hours before they could declare the fire “under control” and according to their investigation, the fire was started by a cellphone that blew up because it left charging.

The carnage left by the fire in the towns of Basubas, Maharlika and Espina left more than 1,200 families homeless and an estimated 1.3 million total in damages.

Together with the 500 homes destroyed by the fire were five classrooms of Tipolo National High School which was meant to be used as an evacuation center by the fire victims.
